Fabrics for your Newry Top or Dress
The Newry is a fun pattern which lends itself especially well to fabric with great body.
You could ABSOLUTELY make your Newry from a tencel or silk with great drape, but we had the most fun pairing the pattern with voluminous and textured fabrics!
To be specific, the Newry Top and Dress is designed to be sewn with a wide variety of light-medium weight woven fabrics (without stretch). We suggest light-medium weight linen, cotton lawn, silk noil, seersucker, and cotton poplins. We think the sleeve looks its best with a fabric with some body, but realistically any shirt or dress-weight fabric will work.
Fabrics we used for our Newry
Leila's cotton Newry uses a great Liberty tana lawn fabric! Although Leila loves tana lawn, she's not generally drawn to small-scale prints (like ditzy florals), so she snapped up this Liberty lawn because it had a slightly larger-scale print.
Crisp cotton lawn is nice to sew with, and a particularly great choice for beginners because they're generally so well behaved for sewing with.
Here, you can see that Leila's lawn holds a gather really well and works really well with the ties on the front of the top.
My peter pan collar version of the Newry Top (View B) uses a ditzy floral print on a shirting weight cotton which is a bit heftier than a lawn. Again, I think the structure of this fabric lends itself really nicely to the Newry, and it was very easy to sew with!

My Newry Dress is made from a cotton seersucker and the structure of this textured fabric pairs nicely with the gathers and voluminous sleeve on the Newry. We love the crinkly texture of seersucker, and after sewing (and pressing) I simply washed (and dried) this dress to have the fabric crinkle up once again.
